Fun fact: ‘spritz’ means ‘splash’ in German! (Which makes it slightly confusing that the ‘Spritz’ cocktail was originally created and enjoyed in North-east Italy!) Whatever its origins, these refreshing and bubbly drinks are perfect for summer.
Delicious and quick to put together, what’s not to love? But first things first…
What exactly IS a spritz?
Originally, a spritz cocktail recipe consisted of a bitter liqueur, such as Campari or Aperol, prosecco and soda water.
These were often drunk as an aperitivo cocktail in summer, as a tasty teaser before a later dinner on a warm evening.
However, the concept of a spritz has more recently evolved, as people become more creative and open-minded about the recipe.
A spritz is now more commonly accepted as a wine-based cocktail made with prosecco (or sparkling wine), spirit or liqueur, and an additional sparkling mixer, typically soda water.
So there’s ample opportunity to get your creativity (and the drinks!) flowing!
