Is Gin & Soda the new Gin & Tonic?

Dash Water’s range of beautiful soda waters has us rethinking the ways that we’re drinking our favourite tipple - don’t worry, tonic water, we aren’t retiring you just yet, but these amazing mixers are a great alternative for when gin fans want a change (or for those who don’t like the bitter quinine in tonic water).

Craft Gin Club members can find Dash Soda Water Rhubarb & Fiery Ginger in their November 2021 Gin of the Month box. With its sweet-tart rhubarb notes and zesty ginger tones, it’s a great example of how delicious soda water can be.

But what is soda water and how do you drink it with gin? Scroll down to reveal all!

So, what exactly is soda water?

Soda water is a type of carbonated water that is made with a small amount of a sodium or potassium compound such as sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate. Carbon dioxide is forced into the mixture under pressure, and when this pressure is released, it comes out again in bubbles.

In the case of Dash Soda Water, sodium bicarbonate is used to create a wonderful mouthfeel, which complements spirits.

What is the difference between soda water and tonic water? The difference between soda water and tonic water is that tonic water is made with quinine and often includes some form of sweetener or flavouring to balance out the bitterness of the quinine. This results in two very different basic flavours: the tonic water you can expect to be bitter while the soda water you can expect to have no flavour or a slight sourness.

Dash Soda Water contains zero sugars or sweeteners, with the sodium bicarbonate (rather than sugar or sweetener) being used to reduce the “bite” of the paired spirit when mixed.

How do you drink soda water with gin?

Soda water is a key ingredient in gin cocktails like a Gin Fizz and a Tom Collins but it is also often used as a direct replacement for tonic water when the drinker doesn’t want or like tonic water. However, with Dash’s range of flavoured soda waters, the G&S can be so much more than a replacement for a G&T. Here are three of our favourite gin and soda serves:

Why Dash Soda Water? Because it’s free from sugar and sweeteners yet bursting with fabulous flavour! And that’s not all…

Delicately flavoured with wonky fruit that would otherwise have gone to waste, Dash Soda Water is great to mix with gin for a number of reasons.

Firstly, it comes in a 200ml can rather than 330ml, which makes it the perfect volume for mixing. The carbonation is also higher than our original Dash Sparkling Water, meaning that when it’s poured over ice the bubbles dissipate less quickly.

Free from sugar, calories and sweeteners and bursting with the flavours of wonky British fruit, Dash Soda Water is a fantastic partner for gin. Yum!
