This fruity and warmly spiced take on the traditional Gimlet is remarkable!

Stranger & Sons Gin, our September Gin of the Month, is a gin of two halves. On the one hand, it has flavours that are bright and playful, perfect for enjoying on a summer’s day. On the other hand, its heady intensity makes it a marvellous tipple for enjoying under the night’s velvet, star-dappled sky. Whilst those richer, darker tones are ideal for a Gibson, the lighter, fragrant side to this gin makes it remarkably well-suited to this unique take on the classic Gimlet.

Invented by the team behind Stranger & Sons Gin at Third Eye Distillery, it was inspired by one of India’s most interesting individuals, Tara Sultan…

In the bar of the Gymkhana Club in Delhi, under the fixed sun of colonial British India: the fierce and partisan overtones of perfume and cigars meddle with the silent pondering of what was to become of this great country at Midnight. The voice of a lady cut through the silence: “Make this Gimlet Indian. If we are not going to be proud of our Indianness then who will?” That night, as the clock struck midnight, India got her freedom and the Gimlet became Indian. One of the many heroes that night was the sari-clad lady in her pearl necklace at the Delhi Gymkhana Club, who couldn’t be prouder as the clock struck twelve on the 15th of August 1947.



Mango & Cumin Gimlet

Sweeter and more complex than a traditional Gimlet, which is known for its sour tones, this cocktail is full of tropical mango flavours that are warmly spiced with cumin. Both of which, pair wonderfully with the fresh, vibrant Indian citrus peel and spice tones of Stranger & Sons Gin. Delicious!

Mango & Cumin Gimlet Recipe

Ingredients

60ml Stranger & Sons Gin 
20ml mango and cumin cordial 
20ml lemon juice
Dried mango, to garnish 

Method

To make your mango and cumin cordial: combine 100g of finely chopped dried mango, 125ml of water and 1g of cumin in a saucepan and simmer over medium heat for 10 minutes. Add 100ml of lime juice and 50g of muscovado sugar and stir until dissolved. Strain and cool before using.

Add all your liquid ingredients to a mixing glass with ice and gently stir. Strain into a chilled coupe or martini glass, garnish and serve. 

A socially conscious tipple from a socially conscious distillery: Third Eye Distillery work with a local self-help group, mainly made up of housewives looking to learn new skills or find a new vocation. They come to the distillery to help maintain the botanical gardens and peel the citrus fruit that goes into the gin. Many then take any remaining fruit away and turn it into cordials and pickles.
