Sweet, ruby-red sloe gin makes a delicious alternative to wine when it comes to our favourite hot cocktail to sip during the colder months.

These two recipes and methods are almost exactly the same as the traditional mulled wine recipe:
Simply warm a selection of your favourite festive spices, things like cinnamon sticks, cloves and star anise, with a good glug of freshly squeezed apple and orange juice and a spoonful of cranberry jelly for an extra touch of sweet, tart berry flavour.
Then remove from the heat and add your sloe gin. The sloe gin is added after the heating process to avoid boiling off any of the alcohol.
Et voila! In less than five minutes you have an absolutely gorgeous drink that is guaranteed to warm your cockles and put a smile on your face, however cold, dark and rainy it is outside!

Can you heat up sloe gin?
You can indeed heat up sloe gin and doing so can bring out more of sloe gin’s complex berry flavours.
However, if you boil sloe gin, you will burn off the alcohol and that can have a negative effect on the flavour profile.
This is why we recommend heating sloe gin gently, taking care not to let the liquid bubble.
Mulled Sloe Gin and Apple
50ml sloe gin
150ml apple juice
50-100ml freshly squeezed orange juice, to taste
1 tsp cranberry jelly (optional)
Cinnamon stick
Any additional festive spices of your choice: try star anise, cloves or cardamom pods
Orange slices and/or fresh cranberries, to garnish
Add the fruit juices, jelly and spices to a pan on medium heat. Stir until the jelly has dissolved - this should take a few minutes.
Remove from the heat and strain the liquid into your drinking glass. Top up with sloe gin. Garnish with a slice of orange and fresh cranberries. You can also pop a fresh star anise or cinnamon stick in too, for added flavour.
Mulled Sloe Gin and Orange
Serves 2
100ml sloe gin
300ml orange juice
2 x star anise
A pinch of cloves
1 x cinnamon stick
1 x vanilla pod
Orange wheel and cinnamon stick to garnish
Add star anise, cloves and cinnamon stick to a saucepan. Cut down the centre of the vanilla pod to expose the seeds and add to the pan with the orange juice. Stir and simmer for between 5-10 minutes. Do not let it boil.
Ladle into two mugs and add 50ml of sloe gin to each mug. Garnish with an orange wheel and cinnamon stick. Serve steaming hot!
