Here's how your cocktail glass is impacting how much you're drinking!

Ever wondered why, at a party or your favourite cocktail bar, your glass mysteriously empties much more quickly than when you’re drinking a G&T at home?

Well, it turns out that you might not be imagining it - and the answer could lie in the glass you’re sipping from!

Yes, scientists from Cambridge University have reported that if you’re drinking from a glass with sides that slope outwards - like the classic cocktail glass you’d have for an Espresso Martini or a Cosmopolitan - you are likely to drink up to a THIRD more than if you are sipping from a glass with straight sides!

According to inews.co.uk, when people in the study sipped from a glass with outward-sloping sides, they drank an average of 30 per cent more in the first ten minutes!

Based on the science, Audrey Hepburn will have finished her cocktail well ahead of Gregory Peck! No wonder she’s got that look in her eye…

Although the speed of drinking then apparently slowed down to match those sipping from straight-sided or inward-sloping glasses, overall the cocktail glass drinkers still consumed far more overall.

“We found people drank around 70ml less when drinking from a flute glass rather than a martini one,” said the lead researcher, according to the Daily Mail. “This study looked at soft drinks but there’s certainly room to consider the effect it may have on alcoholic drinks too.’

The study team also timed how long it took for participants to finish their drink, and found that those with cocktail-style glasses drained their tipple over a minute faster than those with straight-sided vessels!

We knew there was a scientific reason behind our, um, enthusiastic cocktail consumption!

Something to bear in mind when whipping yourself up a tasty Martini at home this weekend…

Have you noticed that you finish your cocktails (even) faster when they’re in a Martini glass?

Or does the speed at which you finish your drink - and how much you drink - simply depend on how nice it is?! Let us know on Facebook!
