Meet the Distillers

Poetic License is a small-batch distillery in the North East of England, and just so happens to be behind some of the most exciting spirits on the market right now.

It all started with Mark Hird, a trained chef with a keen interest in flavours. He spent his life creating some of the most inviting bars, restaurants and hotels in the North East of England. Mark loved nothing better than creating places where people could come together and enjoy a good drink. It was during a chat with a distiller at his local craft brewery that he first became fascinated by the idea of making craft gin.

“When it comes to making spirits, we’re not afraid to break traditions and be bold. We love to take the original flavour profiles you know oh-so-well and transform them into something completely out of the norm, with heaps of character.”
— Alex Clark, Poetic License Distillery

Mark decided to take a closer look at the stuff and study distilling for himself, and by the time he was through it was settled – making gin was for him.

Alex smiles: “Mark was so excited that he went and bought a 500-litre still and named her Gracie. He gave her a home behind the bar at Roker Hotel, where you can still find her today.”

The Poetic License flagship gin went on to win a whole host of prestigious awards, giving Mark the confidence to build the brand further and develop more exciting recipes for adventurous gin drinkers to enjoy.

While Mark sadly passed away last year, his team at Poetic License carry on his legacy of bringing people together by sharing exceptional spirits.

The artisans at Poetic License ended up making a whole selection of delicious gins and liqueurs, crafted with Mark’s bold ethos in mind.

In fact, in 2019 Head Distiller Ben Murphey set about creating their Rarities range, including Poetic License Pumpkin Spice Gin, which would go on to become the star of the collection.

“It’s the fastest-selling gin we’ve ever made. It’s just fantastic. Pumpkin seeds add a subtle flavour to the gin, while also adding a creamy texture.”
— Alex Clark, Poetic License

Head Distiller Ben adds, “The natural slight haze of the gin is due to the whole pumpkin pieces and pumpkin seeds we use, which add a rich body and flavour to the gin, helping to carry the warming autumnal spices.”

With the perfect flavour profile and mouthfeel for celebrating Halloween and Bonfire Night, it’s just the gin to raise spirits this autumn!
