Craft Gin Club members weren’t the only gin fans to get a surprise box of gin this month!
Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have reportedly sent the staff at The Turf Hotel - the official pub of the Wrexham FC’s supporters’ club - several unexpected crates of Aviation Gin, the popular spirit brand co-owned and fronted by Reynolds.
If you’ve not been following the sports - or celebrity - newspaper columns lately, you may well be wondering why on earth a couple of LA-based movie actors more used to gracing the red carpet at glitzy film premieres would be interested in sending gin-based gifts to a small pub in a Welsh market town.
Well, it had been rumoured for many months that Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were interested in buying Wrexham AFC together, so this surprise delivery over the weekend definitely took the excitement up a notch! And we can now report that - according to the Daily Mail - the actors’ bid has been successful, and that Wrexham fans have voted unanimously in favour of selling the non-league team to the Hollywood pair, heralding in a new era for the club.
So we’re sure that a few glasses of gin will be getting raised at The Turf tonight!
Owed by Hawthorn, a community pub company, The Turf Hotel is thought to be the oldest pub to reside in any sports ground in the world and is the home of the Wrexham supporters club, all of whom will hopefully be avid gin fans by the time they have got through all of that amazing Aviation Gin.
What’s more, it’s great to hear that Wayne Jones, owner and manager of the Turf Hotel, has said he is going to donate all of the proceeds made from their windfall of gin to children’s charities and local food banks.
McElhenney and Reynolds have reportedly shared their grand vision for the club with the club’s Supporter’s Trust, letting them know that they want the club to become a global force.
According to Ryan Reynolds’ own statements, the stars and new owners of the club plan to get to Wales 'as much as possible' and 'drink with fans' at matches.
We’re sure that the usual pints might be getting replaced with a new favourite drink following this news - a few G&Ts all round!
