What does it taste like?
Super fresh, with marsh grapefruit and a hint of beachgrass. A touch of not-too-bitter quinine rounds the sea salt minerality and bright acidity. On the nose, evocative perfumes of the Great British coastline – a touch of fresh-cut grass, seaside minerality and light citrus. A pinch of sea salt is the finishing touch, enhancing the flavours and mouthfeel.
What makes it special?
The way they use interesting aromas reminiscent of the beach makes for a moreish and refreshing drink, and the finish of salt acts as a flavour enhancer for gins paired with it.
What does it pair well with?
Fynoderee Manx Dry Gin Elder Shee Special Edition, of course! Its mix of grassy, citrusy and subtly salty tones at the perfect match for the gin’s floral and herb tones.
We spoke to the duo behind Coast British Tonic, Joe McCanta and Richard Watson, to find out more about their motivations to create this marvellous mixer. Here’s what they had to say:
What first inspired you to get the brand started?
Joe: It started with a simple question: why do our drinks always taste better on the coast? We wanted to bottle that time and place!
That question led us to look at the way we mix drinks. Most mixers are too sweet for our taste, and we thought that a slightly different acidity and mouthfeel could create a more refreshing drinking experience.
Richard: We also experimented with adding tiny amounts of sea salt to our drinks. Not enough to make the tonic taste salty, but enough to act as a natural flavour enhancer. We started to get interested in the idea of where the sea salt comes from – the terroir – and now each of the drinks in our range contains sea salt from different coastlines, from Japan to New England.
Where are your favourite coastal spots to enjoy a Coast G&T?
Joe: The best thing about Coast British Tonic is it brings the coast to you. It’s great to enjoy at home or in the garden! But when we can get to the coast, we’ve been known to enjoy our Coast “G&Sea” in a beach hut in Whitstable with friends.
Richard: A UK spot I love is Steephill Cove, on the south coast of the Isle of Wight. Down there on sunny days you feel about as coastal as you can get – away from it all, looking out over the glistening sea.
Could you tell us why protecting coasts and ensuring they stay pollution free is important to you?
Joe: The coast is the place that inspired us to create these mixers. It’s so sad that we can see the threat it’s under – everything from rubbish to overfishing. We are Marine Conservation Society company members, and we believe the work they do is vitally important. As the UK’s leading marine charity, the MCS does such important work to create lasting change to protect the place that means the most to us: the coast.
Richard: Sea salt is such a key part of our drinks. To us it’s magic – just a tiny amount can subtly transform a drink. Giving back to the place that gives us that pinch of magic just felt right.
