Did you know that before the copa glass became the fashionable gin vessel of the moment, the tall highball glass was the traditional choice for a G&T?
In fact, many of the original gin cocktails, such as the Gin Fizz and the Tom Collins, were designed to be consumed in a long, tall glass. (Fun fact: a true ‘highball’ cocktail is one that contains just the spirit and a fizzy mixer, like gin and ginger ale or tonic water.)
Why is the highball glass such a great choice for your gin and tonic? Well, the long, narrow shape allows space for plenty of ice (essential for keeping your drink cooler for longer) as well as plenty of non-alcoholic mixers. The smaller surface area will also help keep your carbonated drinks fizzy for longer.
(Oh, and in case in case you’re wondering what the difference is between a highball - or hi-ball - and a Collins glass is, the answer is: not much! Technically, a highball glass is a little bit shorter and narrower than a Collins glass.)
Science aside, a tall highball glass looks super elegant when you’re serving up a long, cool drink. So we’ve hunted down twnety-one of the most fabulous tall gin glasses on the high street and online - happy shopping!
